Our task was 2-fold for this newly expanded neonatal ICU -- to provide a collection of paintings that would uplift and engage stressed families and staff and clarify wayfinding on the unit.
Our paintings for the blue and orange wings have sky and earth themes respectively. Birds, billowing clouds, kites and blossoming and fruiting plants flow down the long hallways. Several larger focal point paintings refer to quilting motifs and their association with family life.
We also designed stenciled wayfinding icons produced on plaques and wall-mounted next to each room number.
A NICU nurse told us the art was just what she needed to renew her energy and keep her focus on 12-hour shifts.
