A major renovation and addition to Shriners Portland Hospital led to this multiphased commission. Foothills is an Oregon landscape themed mural for a children's play alcove. Featuring the innovative use of natural linoleum, it is playful enough to engage a child's curiosity and sophisticated enough to be appreciated by adult visitors and staff. The colors are richly textured, the surface very durable.
24 new exam rooms were decorated with stenciled friezes using one of four related wetlands motifs. The open-edged designs suggest the graceful flow of water and air and integrate the pattern with the wall as a whole. Gazing at the herons, songbirds, and friends helps calm anxious young patients.
